What is Social 2.0?

If Social 1.0 was about billion+ user platforms that transformed into algorithmically driven dopamine demons, Social 2.0 is an opportunity to build something new and more intentional.

It’s a second chance to build a social layer for the web.

The Social 2.0 era will be marked by the rise of many different niche and micro social networks, each with a core focus or specialty domain. It will also likely be developed atop a global, open, identity protocol - the leading candidate which I believe is NOSTR - where users own their content, data, followers and identity.

This Substack - also called Social 2.0 - will follow and document that journey through not only research, but hands on experience building a real Social 2.0 platform: Satlantis.

The goal is two fold:

1. To explore and document what we’re building at Satlantis, in public.Satlantis is a new kind Social Network, for “Sovereign Individuals.”
   
   It will become the go-to place for people who want more out of life and refuse to conform to the mainstream.
   
   What we’re building is new, so it’s hard to describe. It’s part map, part directory, part aggregator and part social app. Imagine elements of Instagram, Google Places, Meetup, TripAdvisor, NomadList and Facebook Groups but built for the next era.
   
2. To discuss the future of Social Networking.
   When you’re trying to change the world, it helps to talk about it. I will do that here, on behalf of the entire team.
   Expect everything from insights to challenges, lessons, feature updates, market analysis, in a mixture of short form, long form, video and even podcasts.
